INTRODUCTION

This publication presents statistics on the professional services which obtained from the Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017. Professional services comprises activities of architectural; engineering; land & quantity surveying; accounting; legal; advertising; management consultancy and market research; veterinary; scientific research & development and technical testing & analysis; and other professional. The main statistics such as the value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged,  salaries & wages paid as well as value of fixed assets owned is also presented in this publication.

PERFORMANCE OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICES 

The professional services recorded gross output value of RM45.1 billion in 2017 compared to RM40.4 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate value of 5.6 per cent per annum. In line with the rapid growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM1.6 billion to record RM17.7 billion with the average annual growth rate of 4.9 per cent, thus resulting a value added of RM27.4 billion for the year 2017. The number of persons engaged in this sector also reported an increase of 3.0 per cent to 333,139 persons as compared to 314,292 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM11.5 billion compared to RM10.1 billion in 2015.

VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT

In the period of 2015 to 2017, the gross output value of professional services increased 5.6 per cent per annum. Engineering activities was the largest contributor of gross output value with RM9.0 billion (19.9%) in Annual Economic Survey 2018. The second largest contributor was other professional activities with RM6.2 billion (13.8%) followed by advertising activities with RM5.6 billion (12.4%) and legal activities with RM5.6 billion (12.3%). These activities together contributed 58.4 per cent to the value of gross output in professional services.

VALUE ADDED

The total value added recorded in professional services for 2017 is RM27.4 billion with annual growth rate of 6.0 per cent per annum within the period of two years. The engineering activities recorded the highest value added in 2017 which amounted to RM5.3 billion (2015: RM4.8 billion). This was followed by the legal activities of RM4.0 billion (2015: RM3.7 billion) and other professional of RM3.6 billion (2015: RM3.5 billion).

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED

The number of persons engaged in this sector also reported an increase of 3.0 per cent to 333,139 persons as compared to 314,292 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM11.5 billion compared to RM10.1 billion in 2015. Paid full-time employees recorded a total of 302,324 persons with percentage share of 90.8 per cent, as against to paid part-time employees (6,022 persons; 1.8%) and working owners & unpaid family workers (24,793 persons; 7.4%).
