22 from 36 selected agriculture commodities recorded SSR of more than 100 per cent in 2018

Selected agricultural commodities are divided into three categories namely crops (fruits and vegetables), livestock and fisheries. In 2018, a total of 36 agricultural commodities were covered and 22 of them recorded self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) more than 100 per cent.

Crops

• Fruits

Supply of eleven fruits in 2018 was sufficient to fulfill the local demands with SSR of more than 100 per cent. Watermelon recorded the highest SSR  (168.1%) followed by papaya (150.2%) and starfruit (146.2%). Per capita consumption (PCC) of coconut was the highest with consumption of 21.5 kilogrammes per year followed by durian (9.8 kg/year) and banana (9.4 kg/year).

• Vegetables

Seven vegetables have an adequate supply for domestic needs namely tomato (126.5%), brinjal (115.4%), lettuce (114.5%), spinach (113.5%), cucumber (112.7%), long beans (107.2%) and lady’s finger (105.8%). Round cabbage recorded the highest PCC as compared to other vegetables with consumption of 6.1 kilogrammes per year followed by tomato (4.2 kg/year) and mustard (4.0 kg/year).

Livestock

Supply of chicken/duck egg was sufficient to meet the local demands as compared to other livestock in 2018 with SSR of 114.6 per cent. Meanwhile the demand on poultry also high with  consumption of 51.0 kilogrammes per year followed by chicken/duck egg (22.8 kg/year) and pork (17.9 kg/year).

Fisheries

Production of cuttlefish, tuna and shrimp was sufficient in 2018 with SSR of 104.4 per cent, 102.1 per cent and 100.5 per cent respectively. Mackerel recorded the highest PCC as compared to other fisheries at 5.5 kilogrammes per year followed by shrimp (4.4 kg/year), shrimp and tuna with 2.1 kilogrammes per year each respectively.
