1. INTRODUCTION

Statistics on Women Empowerment in Selected Domains, Malaysia, 2018 presents gender related indicators as a measurement to gender equality.This publication contained eight main domains which are Economic structure, participation in productive activities & access to resources; Education; Health & related services; Public life & decision making; Human rights of women & girls; Social protection; Disaster risk reduction and Peace & security.

2. MALAYSIA GENDER GAP INDEX (MGGI)

The Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) was first introduced by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2006 as a framework for capturing the magnitude of gender-disparities. This index measures the gap across four thematic dimensions that are Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health & Survival and Political Empowerment. Score with the value of 1.0 (100%) defined as the equality of men and women.

Malaysia Gender Gap Index (MGGI) produced based on the methodology of the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) taking into account the latest data published by the Department of Statistics, Malaysia (DOSM) together with other ministries and agencies in Malaysia. 

Taking into account the base population in 2017, Malaysia Gender Gap Index is 0.697. This portrays the existing of gender inequality with the gap of 0.303, improved from 0.692 as recorded in 2016. Equality has been achieved for the sub-index Educational Attainment, with score of 1.040. It indicates that women achievement has surpassed men. Health & Survival sub-index recorded the score of 0.961, followed by Economic Participation & Opportunity (0.726) and Political Empowerment (0.061). 

Based on The Global Gender Gap Report, 2017 published by World Economic Forum (WEF), Malaysia stands at 104 place out of 144 countries with the index score of 0.670. Within East Asia and the Pacific, Malaysia stood at 14 rank of total 18 countries. Considering MGGI 2017, the ranking for Malaysia improved to 70 out of the 144 countries listed in the Global Gender Gap Report, 2017.  Simultaneously, Malaysia ranked 8 out of 18 countries in East Asia and the Pacific.
