SERVICES PRODUCER PRICE INDEX (2010=100)

THIRD QUARTER 2021

The Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) for the third quarter of 2021 increased 0.2 per cent to 110.5 as compared to 110.3 in the same quarter of the preceding year. The main sub-sectors that showed increases were Accommodation and Food & Beverage Service Activities (1.1%), Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (1.1%), Education (0.3%), Real Estate Activities (0.2%) and Health (0.2%). However, the index for Transportation showed a decrease of 1.0 per cent. Index for Professional and Information & Communication remained unchanged.

For a quarter-on-quarter comparison, the SPPI rose by 0.2 per cent. This was driven by two sub-sectors namely Transportation (0.3%) and Accommodation and Food & Beverage Service Activities (0.1%). The index for Arts, Entertainment & Recreation decreased by 0.1 per cent while the following subsectors remained unchanged namely Information & Communication, Real Estate Activities, Professional, Education and Health.

TRANSPORTATION

The SPPI for the Transport sub-sector decreased by 1.0 per cent in the third quarter of 2021 as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The decrease was mainly contributed by Passenger Air Transport (-5.9%) and Postal Activities (-0.1%). Meanwhile, there was an increase in the following indices: Other Land Transport (1.0%), Sea & Coastal Water Transport (1.0%) and Courier Activities (0.7%) whereas Freight Air Transport remained unchanged.

On a quarterly basis, the SPPI for the third quarter of 2021 increased 0.3 per cent over the previous quarter. The increase was driven by the index of Passenger Air Transport (1.0%) and Courier Activities (0.1%). However, Freight Air Transport, Postal Activities, Other Land Transport and Sea & Coastal Water Transport indices remained unchanged.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD & BEVERAGE SERVICE ACTIVITIES

On a yearly basis, the third quarter of 2021 showed the SPPI for Accommodation and Food & Beverage Service Activities increased 1.1 per cent. This increase was driven by index of Restaurants & Mobile Food Service Activities (1.4%), Beverage Serving Activities (0.6%) and Short-term Accommodation Activities (0.5%). However, Event Catering & Other Food Service Activities remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, a quarter-on-quarter comparison also recorded an increase of 0.1 per cent. This increase was contributed by Restaurants & Mobile Food Service Activities (0.2%), Beverage Serving Activities (0.1%) and Short-term Accommodation Activities (0.1%) indices. Nevertheless, the index of Event Catering & Other Food Service remained unchanged.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION

Annual and quarterly comparisons for the third quarter of 2021 remained unchanged for the SPPI of Information & Communications sub-sector. However, the Computer Programming, Consultancy & Related Activities index moved up by 0.2 per cent on annual and quarterly basis.

REAL ESTATE ACTIVITIES

The SPPI for Real Estate Activities rose 0.2 per cent as compared to the previous year contributed by Real Estate Activities on a Fee or Contract Basis (0.2%).
A quarter-on-quarter comparison showed the SPPI for Real Estate Activities remained unchanged.

PROFESSIONAL

The Architectural & Engineering Activities; Technical Testing & Analysis index increased 0.1 per cent on annual basis. Nevertheless, the SPPI for Professional sub-sector remained unchanged for both annual and quarterly basis for the third quarter of 2021.

EDUCATION

The SPPI for Education sub-sector increased marginally 0.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2021. The index of Pre-Primary & Primary Education recorded the highest increase of 1.5 per cent. Meanwhile, Secondary Education and Other Education indices showed increases of 0.8 per cent and 0.6 per cent respectively whereas Higher Education index remained unchanged. In addition, the index also unchanged on a quarterly comparison. The Secondary Education index recorded an increase of 0.3 per cent on a quarterly basis while Pre-Primary & Primary Education and Other Education indices remained unchanged. However, Higher Education index decreased 0.1 per cent.

HEALTH

The SPPI for Health sub-sector registered 0.2 per cent increase as compared to third quarter 2020. The increase was contributed by the index of Medical & Dental Practice Activities (0.2%) and Hospital Activities (0.2%). However, Other Human Health Activities index decreased by 0.2 per cent.

On a quarterly basis, the SPPI for Health sub-sector did not record any change. On the other hand, the index for Other Human Health Activities recorded a decline of 0.1 per cent.

ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT & RECREATION

In the third quarter of 2021, the SPPI for Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sub-sector increased 1.1 per cent as against third quarter 2020. This was due to the index of Other Amusement & Recreation Activities (1.1%), Gambling & Betting Activities (1.0%) and Sports Activities (0.9%).  On a quarterly basis, the SPPI for Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sub-sector declined 0.1 per cent, driven by the index of Gambling & Betting Activities (0.3%) while Other Amusement & Recreation Activities and Sports Activities indices increased marginally by 0.6 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively.
