HIGHLIGHTS

In  the  month  of  September  2018, sales of  Wholesale & Retail  Trade recorded  a growth of  7.2 per cent. The  increase  was attributed by Retail Trade which sustained its double-digit growth of  10.5 per cent.

Volume Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose  7.1 per cent to  169.6 points in September  2018  as  compared  to  the  same month a year ago. The increase was largely supported by Retail Trade (10.3%). Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted volume index decreased  3.9 per cent over the preceding month.

Wholesale Trade

Sales of Wholesale Trade registered a growth of  6.5 per cent to RM52.4 billion as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.  The increase was supported by Wholesale of Household Goods and Other  Specialised  Wholesale  which  grew  9.8 per cent and  8.3 per cent respectively. Month-on-month, sales of this sub-sector increased  2.9 per cent.

Volume Index of Wholesale Trade grew  5.8 per cent to  187.8 points in September 2018 as compared to the same month of the preceding year.  

Retail Trade 

For the reference month, sales of Retail Trade sustained its double-digit growth to record  10.5 per cent as compared  to  the same period of the previous year. The expansion  was  propelled  by  Sales  in  Specialised Stores, Sales in Non-Specialised Stores, Sales of Cultural and Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores, Retail Sales of Automotive Fuel and Sales of  Food, Beverages and Tobacco in Specialised Stores.

In line with the sales value, Volume Index of Retail Trade also posted a double-digit growth of  10.3 per cent to  170.6 points in September 2018. As for seasonally adjusted index, it decreased   6.1 per cent. 

Motor Vehicles

Sales of Motor Vehicles plummeted  0.9 per cent in this month after recording double-digit growth for three consecutive months. This month’s lower sales was due to advanced buying by  customers  prior  to  the  implementation  of  Sales  and  Services  Tax  which resulted in motor vehicles sales surged in  the month of June to August, 2018.

Volume  Index  of  Motor  Vehicles  grew  at  a  slower  pace  of   0.4  per  cent  to   118.6 points  compared  to  a  year  ago.  For month-on-month comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector contracted  14.7 per cent.
