Value of construction work done contracted 6.1 per cent to RM29.5 billion in the first quarter 2022

The value of construction work done in the first quarter 2022 continued improving at -6.1 per cent (Q4 2021: -12.9%) year-on-year basis, amounting to RM29.5 billion (Q4 2021: RM27.6 billion).

For the first quarter of 2022, Special trades activities subsector continued a double digit growth of 24.1 per cent whereas the Non-residential buildings subsector recorded an increase of 4.2 per cent in the value of construction work done. Meanwhile, the growth of Residential buildings and Civil engineering contracted by 11.9 per cent and 15.5 per cent respectively (Q4 2021: -18.2% and -20.3%).

The Department of Statistics Malaysia also reports that in the first quarter of 2022, the Civil engineering subsector remained dominant as the main contributor to the value of construction work done with  35.1 per cent share. Besides that, Non-residential buildings subsector contributed 30.4 per cent while Residential buildings and Special trades activities contributed 24.2 per cent and 10.2 per cent respectively.

The report also stated that the private sector grew 3.2 per cent with 60.7 per cent share of total value of construction work done (RM17.9 billion) as compared to the public sector continued improving to -17.6 per cent (Q4 2021: -18.8%) with 39.3 per cent share of total value of construction work done (RM11.6 billion).
