Overview

Sales in the Manufacturing sector registered 9.8 per cent increase with a value of RM177.0 billion in June 2026


The sales value of Manufacturing sector in June 2026 rose 9.8 per cent year-on-year to RM177.0 billion, improved against 8.9 per cent recorded in May 2026. The growth was mainly driven by the Electrical & electronics products sub-sector which registered a robust growth by 18.7 per cent in (May 2026: 24.1%). This positive momentum was further supported by the Petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products sub-sector, which increased by 4.8 per cent (May 2026: 4.9%); alongside a recovery in the Food, beverages & tobacco sub-sector which rebounded to 2.2 per cent from 5.3 per cent contraction in the preceding month. In comparison by month-on-month, sales value increased 2.5 per cent (May 2026: RM172.7 billion).


Sales value growth in the export-oriented industries which accounted for 73.0 per cent of total sales, increased 10.6 per cent year-on-year in June 2026 (May 2026: 28.1%). The performance was led by the increase in the Manufacture of computer, electronics & optical products at 20.7 per cent (May 2026: 28.7%). Moreover, the Manufacture of coke & refined petroleum products also registered an increase of 5.4 per cent (May 2026: 8.6%); while Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. grew 9.9 per cent (May 2026: 5.2%). As compared to the previous month, sales value of the export-oriented industries increased 2.4 per cent.


The domestic-oriented industries expanded 7.7 per cent year-on-year in June 2026, following a marginal growth of 0.2 per cent in the preceding month. This performance was primarily driven by the Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers & semi-trailers industry, which witnessed the double-digit growth of 14.0 per cent (May 2026: -9.1%). Additionally, Manufacture of processed food products also rebounded to 7.0 per cent after recorded 4.5 per cent declined in May 2026. Based on month-on-month basis, the domestic-oriented industries increased 2.7 per cent.


The number of employees in the Manufacturing sector stood at 2.4 million in June 2026, increasing by 1.2 per cent year-on-year (May 2026: 1.1%). The increase was mainly supported by the Food, beverages & tobacco sub-sector which grew 2.1 per cent; followed by the 1.6 per cent growth in both Electrical & electronics products (May 2026: 1.5%) and Non-metallic mineral products, basic metal & fabricated metal products sub-sectors (May 2026: 1.7%). Meanwhile, the number of employees in this sector decreased 0.2 per cent on month-on-month comparison.


The salaries & wages paid in the Manufacturing sector also posted an expansion of 3.1 per cent (May 2026: 2.9%), amounted to RM8.59 billion in June 2026. As compared to the amount recorded in the prior month, the salaries & wages paid rose 0.3 per cent (May 2026: -0.05%). Subsequently, the sales value per employee registered RM73,127 (8.5%), while the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,547, improved by 1.9 per cent year-on-year.


For the second quarter of 2026, the Manufacturing sector recorded sales value of RM524.8 billion, grew 9.3 per cent (Q1 2026: 5.5%). The number of employees increased by 1.2 per cent to 2.4 million persons and the salaries & wages paid also grew 3.1 per cent to RM25.7 billion. During this period, the sales value per employee stood at RM216,777, surged 8.0 per cent.


The cumulative sales of the first half of year 2026 recorded RM1.03 trillion, grew 7.4 per cent (January - June 2025: 3.7%). The number of employee increased by 1.2 per cent to 2.4 million persons; accompanied by a 2.7 per cent growth in salaries & wages paid, which amounted to RM51.6 billion. Furthermore, the sales value per employee stood at RM423,913, increased 6.1 per cent.
