Leading Index June 2026 increases 1.3 per cent,
economic prospects remain positive

Malaysia's Leading Index (LI) maintained its positive momentum, recording an annual growth of 1.3 per cent in June 2026, reaching 114.8 points as compared to 113.3 points in the same month of the previous year. The growth in the LI was primarily driven by a significant surge in Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metals (35.1%) and the stable performance of Real Imports of Semi Conductors (14.2%). This scenario is in line with the strengthening of Malaysia's trade activities, particularly sustained demand for Electrical and Electronics (E&E) products. However, the overall performance was partly offset by declines in several components, notably the Number of New Companies Registered. On a monthly basis, the LI also recorded a marginal increase of 0.02 per cent, contributed mainly by Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metals (0.8%).

Looking ahead, the long-term smoothed trend of the LI remained below 100.0 points. Nevertheless, the Malaysian economy is expected to continue growing, supported by resilient domestic demand and continued expansion in investment activities. At the same time, an increasingly dynamic global economic landscape and the recovery in international trade are expected to continue supporting Malaysia’s economic growth.

For current economic performance, the Coincident Index (CI) showed a strengthening of 2.6 per cent year-on-year with 131.6 points. This increase was underpinned by strong growth in all components, particularly the Real Contributions, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) (16.0%) and the Volume Index of Retail Trade (4.1%). On a month-on-month basis, the CI also increased by 0.3 per cent, contributed by an increase in Capacity Utilisation in Manufacturing (0.2%).

The Diffusion Index for the LI and CI showed an upward trend in June 2026, recording 71.4 per cent and 100.0 per cent respectively, compared with 57.1 per cent and 66.7 per cent in the previous month.
