KEY FACTS

Malaysia’s total trade in June 2021 surged by 29.3 per cent, reaching RM188.7 billion as compared to RM145.9 billion in June 2020. Exports remained strong at a higher level, increasing by 27.2 per cent to RM105.5 billion compared to June 2020. Imports in June 2021 amounted at RM83.2 billion soared by 32.1 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y). Trade balance continued to record a surplus of RM22.2 billion with an increase of 11.7 per cent.

On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, exports, imports, total trade and trade surplus recorded positive growths of 14.3 per cent, 5.9 per cent, 10.4 per cent and 61.7 per cent, respectively.

The overall performance for the second quarter (Q2) of 2021 also experienced significant increase as compared to Q2 of 2020. Exports, imports, total trade and trade surplus expanded by 44.0 per cent, 33.3 per cent, 39.0 per cent and 122.7 per cent, respectively.

A. PERFORMANCE OF EXPORTS

Malaysia’s exports remained strong at RM105.5 billion jumped by 27.2 per cent y-o-y. The expansion was driven by both domestic exports and re-exports. Domestic exports stood at RM84.7 billion and contributed 80.3 per cent to total exports, grew by 21.0 per cent. On the same note, re-exports which was valued at
RM20.8 billion, grew by 61.2 per cent y-o-y. In comparison to May 2021, exports went up 14.3 per cent or RM13.2 billion. Analysis of the seasonally adjusted terms m-o-m, exports increased by 23.3 per cent or RM21.6 billion to RM114.5 billion.

B. PERFORMANCE OF IMPORTS

Malaysia’s imports in June 2021 totaled RM83.2 billion, continued to register a growth of 32.1 per cent or RM20.2 billion. On a m-o-m basis, imports grew 5.9 per cent or RM4.7 billion. Based on seasonally adjusted terms, imports increased 14.0 per cent to RM87.8 billion.

On a y-o-y basis, imports by end use registered an increase with the rise of the intermediate goods, capital goods and consumption goods.
