The accumulated FDI in Malaysia surged to RM812.1 billion, while DIA position stood at RM551.7 billion
Malaysia’s International Investment Position (IIP) registered lower net assets of RM47.3 billion as at the end of first quarter 2022 (Q4 2021: net assets of RM84.9 billion). Both total financial assets and liabilities increased to RM2,125.4 billion and RM2,078.0 billion, respectively.
Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) position increased to RM551.7 billion as compared to RM547.0 billion as at the end of last quarter. This investment was largely in Financial activities which contributed 43.4 per cent or RM239.3 billion, followed by Mining & quarrying (11.7%) and Manufacturing (9.6%). The top three destinations were Singapore with a value of RM114.9 billion or 20.8 per cent, followed by Indonesia (RM52.4 billion; 9.5%) and the Cayman Islands (RM33.3 billion; 6.0%).
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) position in Malaysia expanded by RM23.3 billion to record RM812.1 billion (Q4 2021: RM788.8 billion). Manufacturing sector remained as the highest recipient with a value of RM347.1 billion or 42.7 per cent, followed by Financial activities (22.5%) and Wholesale & retail trade (6.3%). The source for FDI position was largely from Singapore (20.6%), Hong Kong (11.0%) and Japan (10.4%).
As at the end of first quarter 2022, Portfolio investment posted a lower net liabilities of RM108.8 billion from RM111.5 billion in the previous quarter. Meanwhile, Other investment position increased to higher net liabilities of RM68.9 billion (Q4 2021: RM50.2 billion).
Malaysia’s international reserves stood at RM485.8 billion as at the end of March 2022.
