Overview

Malaysia's international investment position recorded net assets of RM27.1 billion

As at end of March 2020, Malaysia’s international investment position (IIP) recorded net assets position of RM27.1 billion after registering nine (9) consecutive quarters of net liabilities. Total financial assets increased to RM1,837.5 billion (Q4 2019: RM1,779.6 billion), while total liabilities was RM1,810.4 billion (Q4 2019: RM1,823.8 billion).

Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) position increased by RM17.3 billion to record RM502.7 billion (Q4 2019: RM485.4 billion). The investment was mainly in Financial & insurance/takaful activities (43.1%), followed by Mining & quarrying (14.3%) and Agriculture (8.1%). Singapore, Indonesia and Cayman Islands remained as the top destinations, while Asia was the main region for DIA. Meanwhile, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) position in Malaysia registered RM689.6 billion from RM691.6 billion in the last quarter. Manufacturing sector was the main FDI recipient by contributing 38.7 per cent, followed by Financial & insurance/takaful activities (23.1%) and Mining & quarrying (7.1%). FDI by region was mainly from Asia, while Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan were the top FDI investors. 

Portfolio investment position recorded a lower net liabilities of RM104.6 billion (Q4 2019: net liabilities of RM170.0 billion), while Other investment position showed a higher net liabilities of RM120.0 billion (Q4 2019: net liabilities of RM92.6 billion).

As at end of March 2020, international reserves stood at RM440.0 billion (as at end of December 2019: RM424.0 billion).
