The Information and Communication Technology and e-commerce contributed 23.4 per cent to GDP, generated RM451.3 billion in 2024

The ICT and e-commerce contributed 23.4 per cent to the Malaysia’s economy, valued at RM451.3 billion in 2024. Hence, the performance of ICT and e-commerce registered a further growth of 5.1 per cent as against 3.5 per cent recorded in 2023.

The ICT performance was driven by the ICT manufacturing industry, which accelerated to 7.4 per cent from 2.4 per cent in the preceding year. This was followed by the ICT services industry and ICT trade industry with a growth of 3.3 per cent and 4.6 per cent respectively.

The performance of e-commerce amounted to RM258.2 billion posted a growth of 4.7 per cent in 2024 compared to 3.0 per cent in the preceding year. The growth was supported by Manufacturing sector with an increase of 4.8 per cent compared to 0.1 per cent in 2023. Additionally, the Services sector grew by 4.9 per cent (2023: 7.8%), while the Agriculture sector surged 7.5 per cent (2023: -2.4%) in 2024.

Exports of ICT products grew by 4.4 per cent with a value of RM449.7 billion in 2024 as compared to a decline of 5.2 per cent in 2023. Nevertheless, imports of ICT products recorded a sharp increase of 22.2 per cent as against to a decline of 14.0 per cent in the preceding year. Therefore, net exports of ICT products posted a surplus with a value of RM119.8 billion in 2024 as compared to RM160.7 billion in 2023.

Employment in the ICT industry accounted for 7.6 per cent of Malaysia’s total employment, equivalent to 1.25 million persons in 2024. In terms of growth, ICT employment grew by 1.2 per cent, compared to 1.6 per cent in 2023. The majority of ICT employment was concentrated in the ICT manufacturing, ICT services and ICT trade industries, which collectively represented 87.4 per cent of employment in the ICT industry.
