EMPLOYMENT IN THE INFORMAL SECTOR IN MALAYSIA, 2015
In 2015, 11.4 per cent of non-agricultural employment was in the informal sector compared to 11.2 per cent in 2013. In terms of number, employment in the informal sector was 1.40 million persons, an increase of 79,300 persons (6.0%) compared to 1.32 million persons in 2013.
(I) BY STATUS IN EMPLOYMENT
Own account workers registered the highest proportion of employment in the informal sector in non-agricultural sector, which was 55.1 per cent in 2015, down 7.1 percentage points compared to 2013. This was followed by unpaid family workers employed in the informal sector which were 30.0 per cent.
(II) BY INDUSTRY
The proportion of employment in the informal sector was the highest for Human health and social work activities, which was 34.3 per cent of total employment in this industry in 2015. However, the percentage decreased 8.2 percentage points compared to 42.5 per cent in 2013. This was followed by 22.1 per cent of employment in the Construction industry who worked in the informal sector, increased 2.2 percentage points compared to 19.9 per cent in 2013.
(III) BY OCCUPATION
In 2015, 31.2 per cent of employment in Craft and related trades workers category were in the informal sector, up 1.9 percentage points compared to 29.3 per cent in 2013. This was followed by Service and sales workers where 19.5 per cent of employment in this occupation category worked in the informal sector.
