Overview

Introduction

This publication presents the labour demand statistics based on the Quarterly Employment Survey conducted on formal private sector establishments encompassing major economic activities namely Agriculture, Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services. The principal statistics of employment presented in this report are jobs, filled jobs, vacancies and jobs created by economic activity and category of skill.

 

Labour Demand, First Quarter of 2021

Total jobs registered in the economic sector during this quarter decreased by 130 thousand to 8,437 thousand jobs (Q1 2020: 8,567 thousand). Filled jobs comprised of 8,260 thousand jobs with a rate of  97.9 per cent. In the meantime, vacancies rate accounted for 2.1 per cent of total jobs which was 177.9 thousand job vacancies (Q1 2020: 166 thousand) while jobs created in this quarter was 17 thousand jobs (Q1 2020: 22 thousand).

 

Labour Demand by Skill

In terms of share across skills category, jobs in semi-skilled category recorded the highest share of 62.4 per cent (5,262 thousand), followed by skilled category (24.5%; 2,067 thousand). A total of 13.1 per cent of jobs (1,109 thousand) were in the low-skilled category.

In Q1 2021, jobs in the skilled category decreased by 14 thousand from Q1 2020 to 2,067 thousand jobs, comprising of 98.0 per cent of filled jobs (2,025 thousand) and vacancies of 2.0 per cent (41.8 thousand). There were 5.3 thousand jobs created in this category during this quarter. 

Semi-skilled category recorded 5,262 thousand jobs, declined by 84 thousand as against Q1 2020. The rate of filled jobs was 98.1 per cent with 5,163 thousand filled jobs while vacancies rate was 1.9 per cent with 98.7 thousand vacancies. This category recorded a total of 10.4 thousand jobs created.

As for low-skilled category, the number of jobs recorded in this quarter was 1,109 thousand jobs, decreased 30 thousand year-on-year (Q1 2020: 1,139 thousand). Filled jobs made up 96.6 per cent of total jobs (1,071 thousand) while job vacancies was 37.4 thousand with a rate of 3.4 per cent. During this quarter, a total of 1.7 thousand low-skilled jobs were created.

 

Labour Demand by Economic Activity

In terms of economic activity, Services sector recorded 51.8 per cent of jobs (4,375 thousand) and 52.6 per cent of filled jobs (4,348 thousand). Meanwhile, Manufacturing sector posted 26.8 per cent of jobs (2,260 thousand) and 26.1 per cent of filled jobs (2,160 thousand).

The highest vacancies at 56.7 per cent (101 thousand) were in Manufacturing sector, followed by Agriculture (16.0%; 28 thousand). Meanwhile, Services sector encompassing 15.1 per cent (27 thousand) followed by Construction (12.0%; 21 thousand) and Mining & Quarrying (0.2%; 413).

During this quarter, jobs created were mainly contributed by Manufacturing sector with 42.4 per cent (7 thousand) followed by Services sector (36.6%; 6 thousand).
