Overview

INTRODUCTION


The Crime Statistics, Malaysia, 2023 publication presents nine selected crime statistics covering Crime Index, Violence & Sexual Crime, Drugs, Corruption, Environment Compliance, Traffic Offences, Commercial Crime, Maritime Crime and Correctional Facility. These released statistics are based on administrative records obtained from various agencies


 

CRIME INDEX


Crime index in 2022 recorded a decrease of 4.1 per cent to 50,813 cases from 52,974 (2021). The crime index includes assault crimes and property crimes. Both crimes showed a decrease of 10.0 per cent and 2.4 per cent, respectively to 10,348 cases and 40,465 cases in 2022.

COMMERCIAL CRIME


The number of commercial crime cases reported by the Royal Malaysia Police in 2022 recorded a decrease of 3.0 per cent to 30,536 cases from 31,490 cases (2021). All type of offences recorded a decrease except offences related to counterfeit money and cyber crime which are increased at 280.4 per cent and 44.3 per cent, respectively in 2022. Fraud offences recorded the highest number of 27,247 cases (89.2%) followed by criminal breach of trust (911 cases; 3.0%) and offences under the Money Lenders Act 1951 (832 cases; 2.7%).

DRUGS


The cases related to drugs which include supply of drugs, drug possession and positive urine test showed an increase of 30.6 per cent to 141,289 cases in 2022. Supply offenses increased by 18.0 per cent, possession of drugs increased by 35.1 per cent and positive urine tests increased by 31.2 per cent as compared to 2021. The number of arrests related to drugs increased 26.3 per cent to 163,697 arrests in 2022 as reported by the Royal Malaysia Police.

CORRUPTION


The number of investigation papers opened by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recorded a decrease of 1.0 per cent to 820 cases (2022) from 828 cases (2021). Investigation papers for all types of offences in 2022 recorded a decrease except for false claims and giving bribes offences which increased by 41.1 per cent and 17.9 per cent, respectively.

ENVIRONMENT COMPLIANCE


The number of summonses issued for black smoke emissions by the Department of Environment (DOE) in 2022 recorded an increase of 119.1 per cent to 631 summonses from 288 summonses (2021). Summonses issued to buses and cars/ vans showed a decrease of 12.5 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively. The highest summonses issued were for lorries (550 summonses) followed by light trucks (50 summonses), cars/ vans (17 summonses) and buses (14 summonses).
