The Annual Economic Statistics (AES) 2022, Employment and Salaries & Wages Statistics presents statistics of number of persons engaged and salaries & wages from the Annual Economic Survey 2022 for the reference year of 2021. It covers all economic sectors namely Agriculture, Mining & quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services sectors.
The total number of persons engaged amounted to 9,569 thousands in 2021. In terms of sex distribution, male workers constituted of 67.2 per cent (6,301 thousand persons) while female workers accounted for 34.1 per cent (3,267 thousand persons). Male workers dominate all economic activities, with a notable presence in the Construction (90.5%) and Mining & quarrying (83.9%) sectors.
From the perspective of economic activities, the Services sector dominated the number of persons engaged in 2021 at 57.7 per cent (5,517 thousand persons), followed by Manufacturing sector with 24.1 per cent (2,303 thousand persons), and Construction sector with 12.4 per cent (1,190 thousand persons). In the meantime, the Agriculture sector employed 496.7 thousand persons (5.2%) whereas the Mining & quarrying sector employed 61.0 thousand persons (0.6%).
Looking at the composition of workers by state, Selangor recorded the highest number of persons engaged at 2,572 thousand persons (26.9%). This was followed by Wilayah Persekutuan (1,680 thousand persons; 17.6%) and Johor (1,181 thousand persons; 12.3%).
The salaries & wages paid amounted to RM318.6 billion in 2021, an increase of RM35.4 billion from 2017 (RM283.2 billion). As the largest contributor to the economy, the Services sector accounted for 56.6 per cent or RM180.4 billion to the total salaries & wages. This was followed by the Manufacturing and Construction sectors at RM89.5 billion and RM33.4 billion, respectively.
Selangor recorded the highest salaries & wages which accounted 30.6 per cent (RM97.5 billion) to overall salaries in 2021. This was followed by Wilayah Persekutuan (22.6%; RM71.9 billion) and Johor (10.9%; RM34.7 billion). Perlis recorded the smallest salaries & wages amount payout of RM0.8 billion (0.2%).
