Water Supply; Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities registered RM16.7 billion value of gross output in 2021
The Water Supply; Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities subsector faced a challenging year in 2021 as gross output value decreased by 10.7 per cent to RM16.7 billion as compared to 2020.
Meanwhile, the intermediate input recorded a slower decrease of 3.6 per cent to RM9.3 billion (2020: RM9.7 billion) and consequently value added declined 18.4 per cent to RM7.4 billion as compared to the previous year.
The value of gross output was mainly attributed by Water Collection, Treatment & Supply industry with a value of RM8.4 billion or a share of 50.6 per cent. This was followed by Waste Collection industry, RM4.0 billion (24.1%) and Waste Treatment & Disposal, RM2.1 billion (12.3%).
The number of persons engaged in this subsector decreased by 8.3 percent to 50,794 persons in 2021 as compared to 55,388 persons in the previous year. Meanwhile, salaries and wages recorded a marginal growth of 0.3 per cent to RM1.8 billion.
Three states with the highest amount of value added were Selangor, Johor, and W.P. Kuala Lumpur with a combined share of 57.5 per cent or RM4.2 billion. Selangor recorded the highest value added with 27.1 per cent or RM2.0 billion. This was followed by Johor and W.P. Kuala Lumpur with 19.6 per cent (RM1.4 billion) and 10.7 per cent (RM0.8 billion) respectively.
