Introduction

DOSM Datathon or The Malaysia Data Innovation Talent x DOSM Datathon 2025 (MDIT x DD 2025) is a national-level competition organised by Department of Statistics, Malaysia (DOSM) in collaboration with Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The competition, which is open to university students, provides an opportunity for them to develop their skills in data analysis and the use of the latest technology software. In an increasingly data-driven world, the ability to analyse and understand data is an extremely important skill. This also helps students enhance their competitiveness in the increasingly competitive job market while supporting the country's capacity development in data science and analytics. With the theme focusing on current issues of "Leveraging ML and AI to develop innovative solutions for Decent Standard of Living in Malaysia", this competition also aims to encourage innovation and creative solutions among students, as well as foster collaboration and professional networking among participants from various institutions.

Objective

DOSM Datathon is organised based on the following objectives:

1. Identify and nurture the creative and innovative talents of higher education students in producing statistical products using the latest technology, while showcasing their ability to apply the skills they have learned.
2. Encourage higher education students to utilize datasets released by DOSM for analysis and problem-solving, which can add value to academic research and innovative projects.
3. Promote the field of statistics to enhance statistical literacy among higher education students, making them more aware of the importance of data in decision-making and planning.
4. Foster interest among higher education students in using the latest technology to produce high-quality statistical products, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and the progress of the nation.

Organiser

1. The Department of Statistics Malaysia
   
   The Department of Statistics Malaysia was established in 1949 under the Statistics Ordinance 1949 and was initially known as the Bureau of Statistics. At that time, the statistics produced were limited to external trade and estate agriculture.
   
   
   In 1965, the Bureau of Statistics was renamed the Department of Statistics Malaysia and began operating under the provisions of the Statistics Act 1965. Since then, the functions and roles of the Department have expanded to include the collection of data/information across economic and social sectors.
   
   
   The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) is a leading government agency under the Ministry of Economy. DOSM is entrusted with the responsibility of collecting, interpreting, and disseminating up-to-date statistics to monitor the economic and social performance of a developing nation.
   
   
   The Department's headquarters is located in the Federal Government Administrative Centre, Putrajaya, with state offices in every state. Additionally, several operational offices have been established in certain states to further strengthen data collection activities more effectively and efficiently across the country.

2. Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)
   
   This faculty is one of the faculties held at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). It was established in 1966, was originally known as ASMEC Studies, which stands for Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, and Cybernetics. The faculty operates at the RIDA Training Hall Campus, Jalan Othman, Petaling Jaya.
   
   
   Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM) in UiTM is a prominent academic institution in Malaysia, dedicated to excellence in education, research, and innovation in the fields of computing, informatics, and mathematics. Established with a vision to produce highly skilled graduates, the college offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs that cater to the growing demands of the digital and data-driven world.

3. Statistics Association (inStats)
   
   InStats is a vibrant student-run group within the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM) with Dr. Nik Nur Fatin Fatihah Binti Sapri as the association’s advisor. This organisation is committed to promoting a thorough knowledge of statistics, data science, and analytical methods among students. Our goal is to foster a love and knowledge for data-based decision-making, improve analytical abilities, and prepare students for their careers.
   
   
   InStats organised workshops, seminars, and competitions that not only help students build practical skills but also provide opportunities to connect with industry professionals. InStats encourage collaboration among peers who share a passion for statistics and data science, creating a welcoming environment for learning and development.
