Revenue for Services Sector Increased 8.3 per cent or RM414.2 billion in the Second Quarter 2018

Introduction

This publication presents statistics on services sector which encompasses sub-sector of  Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from year 2012 until second quarter 2018.

 

Performance of Services Sector, Second Quarter 2018

Performance of Services Sector

Revenue of Services sector increased 8.3 per cent to RM414.2 billion in second quarter 2018 as compared to the same quarter 2017. The highest contribution was recorded by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment (RM24.7 billion; +8.1%). Meanwhile, the total revenue on a quarterly basis increased RM11.2 billion or 2.8 per cent.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector was 3.7 million persons, an increase of 76,331 persons or 2.1 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. On a quarterly basis comparison, number of persons engaged recorded an increase of 52,404 persons or 1.4 per cent.

In the second quarter 2018, salaries & wages paid was RM24.1 billion, an increase of 3.7 per cent as compared to the previous year with a growth of 1.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment recorded a growth of 8.1 per cent to RM328.4 billion year-on-year. Food & Beverages sub-sector performed a stronger growth of 11.3 per cent compared to other sub-sectors in this segment. For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded an increase of 2.6 per cent.

Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 2.2 per cent to 2.7 million persons as compared to the second quarter 2017. Salaries & wages paid grew 3.5 per cent to RM14.3 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged recorded a positive growth 1.6 per cent, while salaries & wages paid increased 0.9 per cent.

 

 

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment posted an increase of  RM4.6 billion to RM61.6 billion in  revenue  for  the  second  quarter 2018. The  growth  was  propelled  by  Information & Communication  sub-sector  which  rose  9.6 per cent. Similarly, the total revenue for this segment also registered an increase of 4.9 per cent on quarterly basis.

The number of persons engaged for this segment increased 1.5 per cent year-on-year to 474,853 persons, whilst salaries & wages paid also grew to RM5.1 billion (2.3%). The number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid also increased 1.1 per cent and 3.5 per cent respectively when compared to the previous quarter.

 

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation  segment  recorded a  total revenue  of  RM15.4 billion, an increase of 8.1 per cent as compared to RM14.2 billion in second quarter 2017. The increase of revenue for this segment was driven by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation at RM6.2 billion with a contribution of 40.2 per cent. However, total revenue of this segment decreased by 1.5 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Number of persons engaged increased by 2.1 per cent to 278,816 persons as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also increased 4.3 per cent to RM2.3 billion. On a quarterly basis, number of persons engaged recorded an increase of 0.8 per cent, while salaries & wages paid decreased by 1.0 per cent.

 

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment rose by RM1.1 billion to RM8.8 billion as against the same quarter of previous year. This increase was driven by Professional sub-sector with RM1.0 billion. For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded an increase of 3.5 per cent in total revenue.  

In second quarter 2018, number of persons engaged increased 176,347 persons or 2.9 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid grew 8.1 per cent to RM2.4 billion. As compared to the preceding quarter, number of persons engaged rose 0.4 per cent, while salaries & wages paid recorded a growth of 4.7 per cent.
