Wholesale & Retail Trade, August 2021

SALES  OF  WHOLESALE  &  RETAIL  TRADE  MALAYSIA  RECORDED  RM100.0  BILLION  IN AUGUST 2021, DIPPED -10.2 PER CENT AS AGAINTS AUGUST 2020, HOWEVER, GREW 7.9 PER CENT MONTH-ON-MONTH

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales  value  of  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  recorded  RM100.0 billion  in  August  2021, registered a growth of  -10.2 per cent year-on-year. The  fall  was  contributed  by  all  sub-sectors  with  Motor  Vehicles   -57.6 per cent, Retail Trade  -7.5  per  cent  and  Wholesale  Trade  -0.1 per cent.

In  terms  of  volume  index,  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  registered  a  growth  of  -12.2  per  cent  year-on-year  to  record  114.1 points. The main sub-sector that contributed to the fall was Motor Vehicles with a decrease of   -59.0 per cent. Retail  Trade  and  Wholesale  Trade also recorded negative growths of  -8.1 per cent  and   -3.3 per cent,  respectively. However,  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  went  up   5.3 per cent  month-on-month in August 2021.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of  RM51.9 billion in August 2021 with a growth of  -0.1 per cent as against August 2020. This decrease was attributed to Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis  -19.4 per cent, Wholesale of Household Goods and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies with  -9.7 per cent and  -6.7 per cent respectively as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose  4.7 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  123.2 points, contracted  -3.3 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-22.3%), Wholesale  of  Machinery,  Equipment  & Supplies and Wholesale of  Household  Goods  to  register   -7.4  per  cent  and   -6.1 per cent  respectively.   On    the    other    hand,   seasonally   adjusted     volume     index     declined    -1.2  per  cent  month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of  -7.5 per cent as compared to August 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this decline were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-14.8%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (-8.1%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-7.5%). Contrarily, sales of this sub-sector went up  2.9 per cent as compared with July 2021.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of  -8.1 per cent to  127.8 points as compared to August 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-15.4%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in  Specialised Stores (-13.2%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-10.9%). Conversely, seasonally adjusted volume index increased  1.5 per cent as against July 2021.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of  -57.6 per cent year-on-year. This decrease was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of  -60.9 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles  -79.0 per cent. However, sales of this sub-sector surged  188.1  per cent month-on-month.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles slipped  -59.0 per cent year-on-year to reach  46.0 points. The decline was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles  (-61.1%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle (-89.0%). On the other hand, seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector expanded  247.9 per cent month-on-month.
