CONTRIBUTION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) RECORDED 19.1 PER CENT IN 2019

Contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to the economy continued to expand at RM289.2 billion in 2019 with a growth of 7.1 per cent. ICT contributed 19.1 per cent to the GDP, comprises of Gross Value Added of ICT industry, 12.9 per cent while e-commerce of other industries, 6.2 per cent.

GROSS VALUE ADDED OF ICT INDUSTRY GREW AT 6.6 PER CENT

Gross Value Added of ICT industry shown an increasing of RM195.3 billion in 2019 with a growth of 6.6 per cent. The major contributor was ICT services (43.5%), followed by ICT manufacturing (33.7%), ICT trade (15.4%) and content & media (7.4%). 

E-COMMERCE INCREASED TO RM127.0 BILLION

The Gross Value Added of e-commerce registered an increase to RM127.0 billion in 2019 with growth of 8.4 per cent as compared to RM117.2 billion in the previous year. In term of share to GDP, e-commerce for other industries contributed 6.2 per cent while e-commerce for ICT industry 2.2 per cent.

EMPLOYMENT IN THE ICT INDUSTRY LED BY ICT MANUFACTURING

In 2019, employment in the ICT industry amounted to 1.14 million persons and contributed 7.5 per cent to total employment. ICT manufacturing industry dominated 36.6 per cent, followed by ICT services (28.7%) and ICT trade (21.0%).
