Median and mean monthly salaries & wages of employees improved at 6.2 per cent and 6.3 per cent

The median monthly salaries & wages received by paid employees improved by 6.2 per cent to RM1,703 compared to RM1,600 in 2015. Meanwhile, the mean monthly salaries & wages recorded the annual growth rate of 6.3 per cent to RM2,463 compared to RM2,312 in the previous year [Table 1].

 

Monthly salaries & wages of employees by sex

In 2016, the median monthly salaries & wages of male employees was higher at RM1,721 compared to female employees, RM1,685. The median for male employees increased 7.3 per cent while for female increased 5.2 per cent compared to the previous year. Similarly, in terms of the mean, male employees received monthly salaries & wages (RM2,500) higher than female (RM2,398) [Table 2].

Monthly salaries & wages of employees by educational attainment

The monthly salaries & wages of the employees with tertiary education was twice the amount received by employees with secondary education in 2015 and 2016. The median monthly salaries & wages of employees with tertiary education was RM3,274 compared to secondary that was RM1,600. Meanwhile, the mean monthly salaries & wages of employees with tertiary education was RM4,042 compared to secondary (RM1,845). Employees with primary education recorded the median monthly salaries & wages RM1,200 and mean RM1,327.

Monthly salaries & wages of employees by strata

In 2016, the median and mean monthly salaries & wages of employees in the urban area were higher compared to rural area. Likewise, urban area registered higher growth of median and mean monthly salaries & wages compared to rural area. The median monthly salaries & wages of employees in the urban area grew at annual growth rate of 7.5 per cent to RM2,000. Meanwhile, the median of employees in the rural area rose 4.6 per cent to RM1,256. The mean monthly salaries & wages of employees in both areas also recorded increases of 5.7 per cent in the urban area and 4.7 per cent in rural area [Chart 2].
