Principal Statistics of Labour Force, Malaysia, Third Quarter (Q3) 2022

  • In the third quarter of 2022, the labour force continued to expand in the third quarter of 2022 (Q2 2022:16.34 million persons), with an increase of 0.6 per cent or 99.7 thousand persons registering 16.44 million persons. Subsequently, the labour force participation rate (LFPR) increased by 0.2 percentage points to mark 69.4 per cent from the previous quarter (69.2%).
     
  • In terms of employment, employed persons continued its upward trend during the quarter, with an additional of 129.9 thousand persons or 0.8 per cent to 15.83 million persons (Q2 2022: 15.70 million persons). Meanwhile, employed persons strengthen up by 3.6 per cent or equivalent to 556.2 thousand persons as compared to same quarter of prior year (Q3 2021: 15.27 million persons).
     
  • During this quarter, the number of unemployed persons continued to decline with a reduction of 30.2 thousand persons or equivalent to negative 4.7 per cent to 611.8 thousand persons (Q2 2022: 642.0 thousand persons). Consequently, a lower unemployment rate was recorded in the third quarter of 2022 at 3.7 per cent as against in the previous quarter (3.9%).
     
  • In terms of LFPR by states, eight states were recorded higher LFPR in the third quarter of 2022, while another half of states showed a decline in LFPR. The highest LFPR was registered in Selangor (75.5%), followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur (73.8%), W.P. Putrajaya (71.7%), and Pulau Pinang (70.9%).
     
  • Looking at the unemployment situation by state, most of the states registered a decline in the unemployment rate during the quarter except for Pahang, Selangor and W.P. Putrajaya. However, W.P. Putrajaya remained with the lowest unemployment rate at 1.0 per cent, followed by Perlis and Johor with 2.5 per cent respectively.
