On a-month-on-month basis, in January 2017, the export unit value index increase of 1.3% to 112.1 points. This was led by animal & vegetable oils & fats (+5.9%) and mineral fuels (+4.3%) and chemicals (+1.9%). Meanwhile, the export volume index recorded a decrease of 8.2% to 117.8 points. This was mainly attributed to chemicals (-12.0%), manufactured goods (-10.8%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (-10.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 2.1%.
In January 2017, the import unit value index registered an increase of 1.1% to 115.2 points which was attributed to mineral fuels (+6.4%), manufactured goods (+1.1%) and chemicals (+0.5%). Meanwhile the import volume index decreased 3.0% to 129.3 points. This was mainly led by manufactured goods (-11.5%), chemicals (-3.3%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-2.6%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index increased 0.9%.
Terms of trade
In January 2017, Malaysia’s terms of trade recorded an increase of 2.7% to 97.4 points when compared with the preceding month, while a reduction of 0.5% was recorded year-on-year.
