Wholesale and Retail Trade Sector registered 7.1 per cent growth in the first quarter 2015

Overall Performance

The Distributive Trade sector increased by 7.1 per cent in first quarter 2015. This increase was propelled by Retail Trade sub-sector (11.3%), Motor Vehicles (7.5%) and Wholesale Trade (4.0%). On a quarterly basis, sales value showed an increase of 1.5 per cent from RM244.0 billion to RM247.7 billion.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector was 1.6 million persons with an increase of   2.9 per cent or 45,723 persons as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Quarter-on-quarter, the number of persons engaged rose by 1.5 per cent or 23,725 persons.

Performance by Sub-Sector

Wholesale Trade

Sales value of the Wholesale Trade sub-sector registered a 4.0 per cent growth to RM120.5 billion as compared to last year. Quarter-on-quarter, this sub-sector recorded a decrease of 0.2 per cent.

The growth was contributed by Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (9.6%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (8.5%) and Wholesale of Household Goods (7.2%).

Number of persons engaged rose by 4.4 per cent or 17,367 persons as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2014. On a quarterly basis, the number of persons engaged increased by 2.3 per cent or 9,154 persons.

Retail Trade

Retail Trade sub-sector recorded an increase of RM9.4 billion or 11.3 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. On a quarterly basis, sales value of this sub-sector increased by 3.2 per cent.

The increase was driven by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (14.4%), Retail Sale in  Non-Specialised Stores (13.9%) and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (10.8%). 

Year-on-year, the number of persons engaged increased by 2.3 per cent or 21,889 persons. The number of persons engaged increased by 1.1 per cent or 10,203 persons in this quarter as compared to the preceding quarter.

Motor Vehicles

In this quarter, sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector went up by 7.5 per cent to RM35.0 billion as compared with the same quarter of the preceding year. Quarter-on-quarter, sales value recorded an increase of 3.0 per cent.

The expansion was contributed by Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles (9.8%), Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts and Accessories (8.8%) and Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motorcycles and Related Parts and Accessories (6.9%).

Number of persons engaged registered an increase of 2.7 per cent or 6,467 persons as compared to the same period of the previous year. Quarter-on-quarter, the number of persons engaged increased by 1.8 per cent or 4,368 persons.
