Consumer Price Index (CPI) declined 1.3 per cent in July 2020 to 119.9 as against 121.5 in the same month of the preceding year. The decrease in the overall index was attributed by the decline in Transport (-10.3%), Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (-2.6%), Clothing & Footwear (-0.6%) and Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Household Maintenance (-0.1%) which contributed 45.7 per cent to overall weight.
Nevertheless, Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages increased 1.4 per cent to 135.0 as compared to 133.2 in corresponding month of the preceding year. This group contributes 29.5 per cent of CPI weight. Similarly, Miscellaneous Goods & Services inclined by 2.9 per cent, followed by Communication (1.6%), Health (1.1%) and Education (1.2%).

Although year-on-year CPI decreased, CPI on monthly basis has increased 0.7 per cent as compared to June 2020. The increase was attributed by Transport (4.9%), Education (0.4%), Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Household Maintenance (0.3%), Miscellaneous Goods & Services (0.3%), Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.1%), Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco (0.1%) and Health (0.1%).
Meanwhile, the CPI for the period of January to July 2020 decreased 0.9 per cent as compared to the same period last year. The decrease was attributed by Transport (-10.0%), Clothing & Footwear (-1.1%) and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (-0.7%).
Index for Group Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages

The index for Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages increased 1.4 per cent in July 2020 as compared to the same month of the previous year. Seven out of nine subgroups in Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages recorded an increase except Milk, Cheese & Eggs (-0.9%) and Sugar, Jem, Honey, Chocolate & Confectionery (-0.8%).
Among the index of goods which recorded year-on-year price increase in most states were Tomatoes (24.5%), Small Onion (24.4%) and Big Onion (20.2%).
The index for Food Away from Home increased 1.6 per cent in July 2020 as against July 2019. The increase in price of Nasi Lemak, Cooked Beef and Cooked Vegetables contributed to the increase of the index of this subgroup.
Consumer Price Index by State
The index for all states decreased between -0.7 to -2.2 per cent in July 2020 as compared to July 2019. The highest decrease was recorded by Melaka (-2.2%), followed by Sabah & Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan (-2.1%) Sarawak (-1.9%) and Kedah & Perlis (-1.9%).
However, all states registered an increase in the index of Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages. The highest increase was recorded by Selangor & Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya (2.3%), Perak (1.7%), Pahang (1.7%), Terengganu (1.7%) and Johor (1.6%) and surpassed the national index. Meanwhile, Negeri Sembilan recorded 1.4 per cent as same as national index of Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages in July 2020.

CPI without Fuel
The CPI without fuel shows a positive rate of 0.2 per cent in July 2020 as compared to to June 2020. CPI without fuel covers all goods and services except Unleaded Petrol RON95, Unleaded Petrol RON97 and Diesel.

Core index rose 1.1 per cent in July 2020 as compared to the same month of the previous year. Among the major groups which influenced the increase were Miscellaneous Goods & Services (2.9%), Communication (1.6%) and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (1.4%).
Core index excludes most volatile items of fresh food as well as administered prices of goods and services.
