The official handing over of the 62nd ISI WSC 2019 to Malaysia


Marrakech, July 21: Malaysia has officially accepted the inauguration of the 62nd International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress (ISI WSC). The inaugural congress will be held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 18 to 23 August 2019 and is expected to be attended by 2,500 statistical experts and data scientists from around the world.

The delegation led by Dr. Mohd Uzir bin Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia attended the 61st ISI WSC on 16 to 21 July 2017 in Marrakech, Morocco. The Malaysian delegation comprises the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysia Institute of Statistics.  Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau, was also there to promote the 62nd ISI WSC 2019.

According to Dr. Mohd Uzir, Malaysia's participation during the 61st ISI WSC 2017 aimed at accepting the official handing over of the 62nd ISI WSC 2019 from the former host, Morocco and to attend key meetings with statistical experts around the globe.

While attending the 6 days congress, as the Chairman of the National Organising Committee of ISI WSC 2019, he had also made a courtesy call to His Excellency Ahmed Lahlimi Alami, High Commissioner for Planning, Morocco to strengthen the networking in relation to statistical science. In addition to this, strategic network with Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSO) and statistical experts have also been enhanced. This close cooperation will lead to the successful implementation of ISI WSC 2019.

Intensive promotional activities were also conducted at ISI WSC 2017 through the set up of ISI WSC 2019 Exhibition Booth to encourage international participants to join the congress in 2019. This promotion has had a significant impact on Malaysia's image in organising international-level statistical congress. This can indirectly empower the country's statistical capacity and systems in various fields of statistical science and latest research. Throughout the 5-day promotion, more than 1,500 statistical experts has made early registration and expressed their interests to join the congress in 2019.

During this ISI WSC 2017, the Malaysian delegation had presented 14 scientific papers in statistical science and shared their innovation and best practices with experts and participants from various countries. The organisation of 62nd ISI WSC 2019 is in line with the government's aspiration to create at least 1,500 data scientists by 2020 as well as providing researchers from local universities with opportunities to present their research at a prestigious international congress.

As a host, Kuala Lumpur will witness the presence of statistical experts from around the world to participate in this prominent congress. The presence of the delegation will also contribute to the increase in tourism activity in the country and the Malaysian economy as a whole.

At this congress in Marrakech, Malaysia has also made a history in which the Chief Statistician of Malaysia, Dr. Mohd Uzir was appointed as the Executive Committee for the International Association for Official Statistics, which is a prestigious international statistical body. It comprises 12 selected countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.
