WASSALATUWASSALAM MUALA ASHRAFIL AMBIA IWALMURSALIN WA’ALA ALIHI WASAHBIHI AJMAIN

Ladies, gentlemen and all DOSM staff,

Alhamdullillah, first of all let us be grateful to the Almighty Allah SWT for His mercy that we have achieved success in 2018 with excellence. It is my pleasure to express deep appreciation and gratitude to all staff of Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) for their high level of unity and enthusiasm in carrying out duties and responsibilities throughout the year of 2018 in spurring the department's agenda.

I also prayed to some of our beloved staff who has sadly passed away in 2018. Let's dedicate the Al-Fatihah to them, may they will be placed in those blessed by Allah SWT.

Ladies and gentlemen,

With the efforts and togetherness, we have achieved success and recognition in 2018 either nationally or internationally. DOSM has gained international recognition by being appointed as Chairman, Members of the Bureau, Organization of Islamic Cooperation Statistical Commission (OIC-StatCom) for the period of 2018 - 2019 and Chairman of the Committee on Statistics of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for the period of 2018 - 2020. This trust is continued as DOSM was appointed in several number of working groups such as Co-Chair Working Group on the Development of New Strategic Vision of OIC-StatCom (2018-2024) Member of the Friends of The Chair Group on The Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (FOC-FPOS), 2018-2019 - UNSC and others.

At the national level, DOSM continues to record another historic event when YAB. Dato' Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Dr. Wan Ismail, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia has launched two publications, Socioeconomic Report 2017 and My Local Stats 2017, which was first published by DOSM on 25th July 2018.

In addition, the National Statistics Day (MyStats Day) was celebrated for the second year in 2018 on 20th October 2018 at Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Bangi, Selangor which was officiated by YB. Senator Dr. Mohd Radzi bin Md Jidin, Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs. In celebration of this special day, various programs have been implemented nationwide from October until November 2018 that involve a total of over 10,000 entries from various levels of society, ranging from pre-school to professional level.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Thanks to all DOSM's staff, in 2018 we have produced a total of 304 publications, including 35 new publications such as the State Socioeconomic Report, My Local Stats by States, Criminal Statistics of Malaysia 2018 and Marriage & Divorce Statistics. Congratulations and thank you to all! I would like to express my sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to the selected respondents and ministries / agencies who have provided continuous cooperation in the success of the census and surveys conducted by DOSM.

This recognition and success has attracted  more than 1,200 news coverage / citations related to DOSM in the media and this has indirectly shown the DOSM brand in various dimensions both locally and abroad. Hence, this success has to be maintained and this situation has demanded that all DOSM staff braces itself for increasing productivity through a systematic work planning while meeting the increasingly current statistical requirements.

In achieving the Government's wishes and insights in prioritizing the people, we need to be sensitive to the changing environment, willing to accept and make changes in terms of thinking, attitude, quality of work and so on. We need to be better, more agile in understanding the aspirations of society, more strategic and always strive to improve the department's image exudes passion to become a high performance organization.

In line with the mainstream change, the Industrial Revolution has now entered the fourth stage, better known as IR 4.0, that is an evolutionary process of the rapidly expanding computerization and automation system. IR 4.0 is also an Internet-of-things (IOT) era with smart devices interconnected via the internet. The passage of time has required us to improve work processes with modernization in the production of statistical services and products. This process requires consideration of high emotion, durability and high morale as well as the appreciation of the culture and practice of innovation and creative.

Ladies, gentlemen and all DOSM staff,

There are two main challenges in this 2019 to be taken, namely the launch of the 62nd International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress (ISI WSC 2019) and preparation of the Census of Population and Housing Census 2020 (MyCensus 2020). The ISI WSC 2019 will take place from 18 to 23 August 2019, while various programs have been planned throughout 2019 for the preparation of MyCensus 2020. This situation has demanded all DOSM’s staff to hold together in implementing and creating success in organizing both of these activities.

It was Henry Ford who said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

"Happy New Year" to all, especially to all DOSM staff. Hopefully the beginning of 2019 will provide a determination, sincerity and enthusiasm to all of us. To all stakeholders, users and respondents, let us work together as well as possible to produce reliable statistics for the country's most vibrant management.

Thus, let us pray together so that in the year of 2019 we are blessed with physical and mental strength, wisdom and health in fulfilling our responsibility and trust this year. Positively, we will be able to move with the utmost commitment to shape and develop the country in whatever we do.

Happy New Year 2019

Thank You
