INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY RECORDED DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH OF 10.4 PER CENT IN 2020

Contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to economy continued to expand at RM320.0 billion in 2020, registered a double-digit growth of 10.4 per cent compared to 7.3 per cent in the previous year. ICT contributed 22.6 per cent to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), comprises of Gross Value Added of ICT industry (GVAICT), 14.2 per cent  and e-commerce of other industries, 8.4 per cent.

GROSS VALUE ADDED OF ICT INDUSTRY GREW BY 3.3 PER CENT

GVAICT registered a value of RM201.6 billion with a slower growth of 3.3 per cent in 2020 as against to 6.6 per cent in the preceding year. This was attributed by the decline in content & media and ICT trade industries with 11.7 per cent and  4.9 per cent respectively. However, the ICT manufacturing and ICT services industries continued to supported the growth of GVAICT with 5.9 per cent and 6.7 per cent.

E-COMMERCE INCREASED TO RM163.3 BILLION 

Gross Value Added of e-commerce increased to RM163.3 billion from RM129.2 billion in 2020, surged 26.5 per cent (2019: 10.0%). The growth was supported by ICT trade and ICT services. In terms of share to GDP, e-commerce of ICT industry contributed 3.1 per cent while e-commerce for other industries was 8.4 per cent. 

EMPLOYMENT IN THE ICT INDUSTRY LED BY ICT MANUFACTURING

Employment in the ICT industry in 2020, amounted to 1.16 million persons with contribution of 7.7 per cent to total employment. ICT manufacturing industry was the main contributor with 35.3 per cent followed by ICT services (29.5%) and ICT trade (21.7%).
