§ Malaysia’s population in the fourth quarter 2022 was
estimated at 33.0 million, increased by 1.3 per cent as compared to fourth
quarter 2021 (32.6 million). The total population comprised 30.4 million
(92.0%) Citizens and 2.6 million (8.0%) Non-Citizens. This increase was
contributed by the positive of natural increase and higher in the Non-Citizen
population due to the increase of foreign workers and students into Malaysia.
§ Males population increased from 17.1 million to 17.4
million as compared to the fourth quarter 2021 while females increased from
15.5 million to 15.6 million in the same period. The overall sex ratio of
population was 111 males per 100 females while sex ratio for Citizens was 104
males per 100 females. Three states with the highest population in the fourth
quarter 2022 were Selangor (21.6%) followed by Johor (12.3%) and Sabah (10.4%).
§ The number of live births for the fourth quarter of
2022 decreased 2.1 per cent from 112,205 births in the fourth quarter of 2021
to 109,842 births. Males babies outnumbered females babies with 56,348 births
as compared to females babies (53,494 births). Selangor recorded the highest
live births with 21,384 births (19.5%) while Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan
recorded the lowest (362 births: 0.3%).
§ A total of 48,780 deaths was recorded in the fourth
quarter 2022, decreased by 10.2 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter 2021
(54,316 deaths). The number of deaths recorded for males were 28,222 while
females 20,558 deaths. Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths with
7,711 deaths (15.8%) while Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya was the lowest with 75
deaths (0.2%).
§ Deaths
due to COVID-19
decreased in the fourth quarter of 2022 from 4,738 deaths in the fourth quarter
of 2021 to 492 deaths. Deaths due to COVID-19 contributed 1.0 per cent from the total
number of deaths in the fourth quarter of 2022. Selangor recorded the highest
number of COVID-19 deaths
(109 deaths) while one death was recorded in Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan and
Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya.
