Overview

The Annual Economic
Statistics (AES), 2022 presents the performance of the economic sector
comprising Agriculture, Mining & quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and
Services sectors. The value of gross output for the overall economic sector
grew 10.6 per cent with an increase of RM307.6 billion to RM3,211.9 billion in
2021 as compared to RM2,904.3 billion in 2020.
Manufacturing sector
remain as a main contributor with a share of 50.1 per cent (share 2020: 47.2%) to the value of gross output amounted to RM1,609.3 billion(2020: RM1,371.1 billion) with an annually percentage change of 17.4 per cent.
This was followed by the Services and Construction sectors with a value of
RM1,174.5 billion (share: 36.6%; annual percentage change: 1.6%) and RM170.8
billion (share: 5.3%; annual percentage change: -1.4%) respectively.
Intermediate input for
the overall economic sectors registered a double-digit growth of12.2 per cent (2020: -5.0%) to RM1,959.8 billion as compared to RM1,746.0
billion in the previous year. The value added for all economic sectors in 2021
grew 8.1 per cent(2020: -7.8%) with an increase of RM93.8 billion to RM1,252.1 billion against
RM1,158.3 billion in the preceding year.
Services sector with a
share of 52.6 per cent (2020: 55.9%) was the prime mover to the economy which
the value added rebounded at 1.7 per cent (2020: -6.7%) amounted to RM658.2
billion in 2021 as compared to RM647.0 billion in 2020. This was followed by
the Manufacturing sector increased a double-digit growth at 14.6 per cent (2020:
-2.9%) with a value added of RM355.1 billion (2020: RM309.9 billion).
Meanwhile, Mining and Quarrying sector recorded a robust growth of 31.6 per
cent (2020: -26.4%) with a value added of RM125.1 billion (2020: RM95.0
billion).
The number of persons engaged
for all sectors in 2021 decreased at 0.4 per cent(2020: -2.8%) stood at 9.57 million persons against 9.61 million persons in the
preceding year. In addition, the value of salaries and wages paid recorded an
annual growth rate of negative 0.3 per cent (2020: -3.4%) amounted RM318.6
billion (2020: RM319.4 billion). The number of persons engaged in Services
sector recorded 5.52 million persons as compared to 5.51 million persons in the
previous year with a value of salaries and wages paid amountedRM180.4 billion (2020: RM179.4 billion). Meanwhile, Manufacturing sector
registered number of persons engaged and salaries and wages paid with 2.30
million persons
(2020: 2.25 million persons) and RM89.5 billion (2020: RM86.7 billion)
respectively.
Moving into the economic
performance by states, top three states contributed 60.8 per cent to the total
value added led by Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak. Selangor takes the
lead with a share of 25.1 per cent amounted RM314.4 billion (2020: RM291.9
billion). This was followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur with 23.9 per cent amounted
RM299.8 billion (2020: RM304.0 billion) and Sarawak with 11.8 per cent amounted RM147.9
billion
(2020: RM107.5 billion).
